October Fishing Report: Tough Bites & Fall Patterns Ahead

October Fishing Report: Tough Bites & Fall Patterns Ahead

Warm, dry weather stalled lake surface temperatures in the mid 50s and made October’s bite tough. Fall weather arrived around October 24, bringing cooling water and a shift toward deeper structure.

The weather in October has been pretty dry and warm. Lake surface temperatures stalled in the mid 50s with the warm days, but fall weather finally arrived during the last week of October. The October bite has been tough!

Musky on Green Weeds

Most musky are still relating to green weeds. We have the boat running right on weed edges while casting over weeds and running musky suckers alongside the boat.

Walleye, Crappie & Perch

The active walleye are spread out everywhere. We are still finding active walleye relating to weeds, but most of our biters came on rocks or deep-hole edges in 12–22 feet with a 1/16–1/8 oz jig and minnow. Crappie and perch were similar to walleye.

Cooling Water & Fall Patterns

I think fall has finally arrived as of October 24, so the bites should settle into their fall patterns shortly. As water temperatures continue to cool, all fish will push out deeper as the weeds die. Walleye, crappie, and perch will head for deep holes. Musky will follow suit, but I will start to work rock humps and steep breaks as well.

Fishing Through Turnover

Once deeper lakes start to go through their turnover process, I will try to fish shallower lakes or flowages and chains of lakes that have current or river systems.
